The vehicles for the 2026 season are designed to be lighter, more agile and sustainable relative to present-day cars.

F1 has revealed the new vocabulary that will be used to explain the advanced features of its upcoming 2026 technical rules.

The racing series is implementing what is potentially the largest rules overhaul in its competitive history starting in 2026, featuring fresh chassis and power unit regulations and the mandatory use of eco-friendly fuels.

The new power units, which keep the hybrid V6 layout, boast a significantly increased electrical capacity, necessitating significant developments in the cars' aerodynamics.

Over a race distance, drivers will strategically manage ERS energy – potentially on qualifying laps – to secure the optimal result.

Broad surveys were conducted with a diverse audience, including long-time followers and newcomers, to determine which phrases would make things clearer of the key features of the 2026 changes.

The primary aim was to present a series of complex technical aspects of the sport as straightforward as possible for the broadest viewership.

Consequently, older technical labels for certain devices – such as "modes labelled X and Z" for the adjustable aero – have been phased out in favor of intuitive labels that succinctly convey the real-world effect of the innovation.

Key Technical Innovations

The FIA states that competitors will have more power to make decisions regarding battery management, energy recovery, and saving energy.

The 2026 rules introduce a range of settings that will be clearly indicated on broadcast screens to improve the audience's understanding of the race battle.

  • Passing Mode: This takes over from the existing Drag Reduction System. It provides a burst of extra electrical energy available when a driver is within one second the leading car to facilitate an overtaking maneuver.
  • Power Mode: This is a manual battery discharge from the hybrid system that can be used in offensive or defensive moves. It grants the driver full engine and battery energy at the activation of a control.

Both of these crucial modes will have to be managed carefully, as the overall battery capacity is restricted.

  • Active Aerodynamics: Both the front and rear wings move automatically – spreading on the high-speed sections for reduced drag and top speed, and angling down in the corners for optimal cornering performance.
  • Recharge: The system can replenish their battery with power recovered from braking, or during coasting at the conclusion of a straight or in sections where only reduced throttle is required.

What's Changing on the Cars?

The vehicles for the new era will be more compact and lighter than this year, with a wheelbase cut by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width reduced by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight lowered by 30kg.

Total aerodynamic grip is expected to drop by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although constructors will undoubtedly recover some as they develop their cars.

Drag has been reduced by 40%. The cars will utilize adjustable aero systems – front and rear wings will adjust on the straights to cut resistance and increase straightline speed and click back into place for peak handling.

Pirelli tyres will continue to use the current rim size, but the rubber compounds will be narrower, by 25mm at the front and 30mm at the rear.

What's Changing in the Engines?

The 2026 engines will have an approximate 50-50 split in power produced by the internal combustion engine and the electrical system, a rise from about 20% battery contribution this year.

The ERS setup is streamlined through the removal of the Motor Generator Unit – Heat, the intricate and expensive component that recovered energy from the exhaust turbo.

Cars will be mandated to operate on 100% sustainable fuel, manufactured from plant-based materials or synthetic industrial processes.
