American flight controllers are increasingly looking for additional employment and calling in sick, as they remain on duty without pay during the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has announced.

"These professionals are wearing thin," the official informed Fox News on Sunday, as certain aircraft were halted on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

After the federal closure on October 1st, flight controllers, who are considered critical staff, were instructed to continue performing their jobs without pay.

But a number have been missing, causing airports to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has added to delays caused by climate and other issues.

Over three thousand American flights were delayed on Sunday, and the secretary stated he anticipates the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy remarked in an interview on a weekend program, adding that he had met with multiple professionals to hear their concerns directly.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I drive Uber, can I find another source of earnings to cover expenses?'" he added.

The secretary further mentioned that on the previous day 22 alerts at airfields said flights would be held up due to a shortage of workers - one of the highest after the closure started.

The American federal closure entered its 26th day on Sunday, rendering it the second most extended shutdown in history.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would slow down the number of aircraft in the sky if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his interview, he declined to respond directly when asked if it was secure to travel by air in the US, and instead issued a personal plea to the professionals.

"I require my controllers focused on the flight paths, not on the finances at their households," Duffy stated.

On that day, some planes were stopped at LAX due to employee deficits, leading to interruption at the fifth most active airport in the country and one of the busiest in the world, as well as additional travel extending upward to the city of Oakland.

The FAA notice went out at 8:45 AM in the morning on Sunday. Numerous trips were back on schedule by midday.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, though, were delayed an mean of 82 minutes due to staffing shortages, and the FAA indicated Dallas Fort-Worth, the second most active airport in the country, could encounter difficulties from reduced staff later in the day.
