In a significant move for their rebuilding roster, the Chicago White Sox have signed slugger Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a two-year contract for the accomplished player.

Deal Structure and Player Perks

The agreement grants a seven-figure signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, combined with salaries of sixteen million for the upcoming season and seventeen million for the following year.

Additionally, Murakami's compensation may grow based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for winning the MVP award.
  • $500,000 for finishing second or third in MVP voting.
  • $250,000 for finishing in the top ten.
  • Another $250,000 for earning the ROY honor.

The contract includes that he will not be optioned to the minors without his approval and makes him a free agent at the end of the contract. Extra provisions include a club-supplied interpreter and travel costs between his home country and the States.

Transfer Payment and Franchise History

As part of the transaction, Chicago owes a compensation payment of $6,575,000 to the Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's Central League. The Japanese club are also entitled to a supplemental fee of 15% triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami is set to become the fourth player from Japan to play for the Chicago franchise, following reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu once managed Murakami during their time in Japan.

Career Highlights

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 in February, joins a emerging lineup in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are coming off a last-place season, finishing last in the American League Central but representing a notable improvement from the year before campaign.

The winner of back-to-back league MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is renowned for a historic 2022 season where he belted 56 homers, surpassing the all-time record for a Japanese-born player previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the most youthful hitter ever to win Japan's prestigious Triple Crown.

His last year was curtailed to 56 games due to an oblique injury. Despite recording often, he still managed .273 with 22 home runs and 47 runs batted in.

Over his eight-season tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has accumulated a .270 batting average with 246 HRs, 647 runs batted in, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 contests. He started playing mostly at first base, he has more recently played to the hot corner.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's heroics were on center stage during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he delivered a game-ending two-base hit that drove in two fellow Japanese stars for a dramatic one-run win. The next night in the title match against the Team USA, he slugged a tying home run in the early innings, helping Japan's subsequent championship win.

The lefty slugger is scheduled to be officially presented at a introductory event on Monday.
