Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Claim Initial Wins After Player Arrests

NBA game action

Miami scored 86 opening half scores versus the Grizzlies

The Heat earned a overwhelming 146-114 win over the Grizzlies in their initial basketball match after player Terry Rozier was detained over suspected unlawful gambling.

Portland Trail Blazers coach Billups was also detained in connection with a sweeping FBI investigation into illegal gambling. Both men contest the allegations.

However, the Heat were not distracted as they put up eighty-six opening half scores to be ahead of the Grizzlies by 39 at halftime, the biggest half-time advantage in the team's 37 year history.

Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 points and afterwards stated Terry had the support of the team.

"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Bam stated. "You support him through and through. He's like family at the end of the day."

Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Terry is somebody who is important to everyone. He has made a real positive impact on our locker room.

"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he faces the situation."

The Trail Blazers also won their first game after the arrests, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter taking over as interim coach in Billups' non-attendance and guiding the squad to a decisive 139-119 win over the Golden State Warriors.

"We all had great experiences with Chauncey and his coaching style," Tiago remarked. "We're thinking of him and his family but our focus is on the game."

NBA Commissioner Silver 'Upset' over Recent Events

Speaking about the detentions for the first time, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said he was "very upset" by the incidents of the recent days.

"Nothing is more critical to the league and its fans than the integrity of the game," he told Amazon Prime. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."

The commissioner also said an league probe into Rozier's actions in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he participated for the Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.

"We were informed by the regulators and the gambling firms," he added.

"We then looked into that situation and were very transparent about it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.

"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the league office can't do.

"So, we've been working with them from that point. Naturally, what they announced yesterday was an charge.

"Moreover two and a half years after, he has not been found guilty of anything, in fairness to Terry.

"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance in this case between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
