A uniquely yellow-colored apartment block visible behind assisted us locate the footage.
We are analyzing images and video posted earlier today that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the site from which the pictures were from was based on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to match the unique yellow hue of a nearby apartment building seen in the video.
Locating additional buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified where the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
