New York Unveils Portal for Citizens to Share Immigration Videos After Detentions of 4 American Citizens
New York state AG has launched a fresh reporting form urging locals to share photos and videos of ICE operations around New York. This action follows a day after a significant enforcement action disrupted Chinatown in Manhattan, sparking mass outcry.
American Citizens Arrested In Raid
A lawmaker revealed during a news conference that four American citizens were taken into custody and held for "about 24 hours" after the enforcement action. Rallies broke out in the city on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"All New York residents deserves to exist without intimidation," the attorney general declared in a announcement.
"Anyone who observed and recorded ICE activity recently, I encourage you to submit that material with us. We are committed to assessing these reports and investigating any legal breaches."
Submission Process
The portal provides fields to upload visual evidence of the operation, plus a section to note geographic details. Prior to sending, individuals must mark a checkbox that acknowledges that "authorities might employ any evidence provided in a public document, including in a lawsuit or government document."
Details of the ICE Action
The Manhattan operation, which witnesses say included more than 50 ICE personnel, occurred in a famous area of NYC where counterfeit purses, items, goods and other goods are sold daily in large quantities – typically to sightseers.
Videos of the operation reveal numerous hooded and equipped federal agents restraining and arresting a person, and forcing aside witnesses. Throngs of locals trailed the agents along the roads. An armored truck was observed moving along the Manhattan avenues.
Political Response
During a midweek briefing held with the rights organization, Representative Goldman, a Democrat, announced that four American citizens were taken by federal agents for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where nationals should be taken for without cause." He noted the individuals were freed on the following day with no charges filed.
"The goal is evident here. It is not about removing offenders," Goldman said. "This constitutes a militarized effort to provoke unrest. It is merely a excuse to provoke conflict for the government to utilize the troops to stop unrest that they initiated."
Widespread Condemnation
Fury over the ICE raid quickly spread – every mayoral candidates criticized the raid, including the state leader.
"Once again, the Trump administration chooses oppressive displays that generate terror, not safety. It must stop," one mayoral candidate stated.
NYC immigrant rights groups voiced concern too.
"ICE raided the neighborhood with tactical trucks, masked agents and tactical gear to target street vendors attempting to earn income. This raid had nothing to do with public safety and was entirely about frightening communities and areas," said the president of a major immigrant coalition.
Official Guidelines
Official guidelines bans the holding of citizens and the agency has said it will not take into custody citizens. However, investigative journalism has found that numerous citizens have been detained unlawfully by federal agents since the beginning of the existing leadership.
