Russell Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks

NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this Tuesday, reacting to recent comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."

Wilson's response directly referenced the infamous bounty scandal issue from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.

During that period, the league found that the Saints had incentivized players for making hard hits on opponents. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the league for one season.

What Sparked the Latest Dispute

Wilson's response came after Payton delivered remarks after the Broncos' remarkable 33-32 win over the Giants. The coach suggested that the Giants had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.

Additionally, Payton hinted that he had told team owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson over Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" the coach commented.

Context of the Coach-QB Relationship

  • The quarterback joined the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and signed a 5-year, $245M extension.
  • The team finished 4-11 in his debut year before Denver brought in Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a period in TV commentary.
  • The coach replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a decision that prevented the player from getting injured.

If Wilson remained on the roster by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for 2025 would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, ending the ugly breakup between the quarterback and his mentor.
