Scream OG Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The long-awaited slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is gearing up for a major family reunion. This latest installment marks the legendary return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only beloved characters returning to the fray.
"Returning to a role you portrayed in your mid-20s when you're 55 was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard admits.
A Triumphant Comeback for Fallon Favorites
It has been established that a trio of different characters from past films are set to return in this new outing, even though meeting their demise in previous installments. The precise method of their return is still unclear. Fans should prepare for the reappearance of the beloved and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the original killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Iconic Status
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first occasion since a brief cameo is a dream come true, though he is terrified about the audience response. The performer vividly recalls the exact moment he got the offer from the original writer.
"I remember the phone call. I remember the small talk. I remember him asking. That instance is permanently etched on my mind," he states. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved cult status in the years since the 1996 movie was released, which made Lillard feeling very nervous.
"Truthfully, that's a role that lives in infamy, for better or worse," he notes. "A part that is now represented in every single Scream mask that walks around every Halloween."
The Anxiety of Letting Down the Fans
Now that filming has concluded, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the finished film. He admits to feeling immense pressure about not wanting to be the one who ruins the popular series.
"The outcome is either a hit and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I don't know if the movie's be successful. I don't know if people want to see me. I've definitely seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the series. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Theories and Excitement Run High
While many dedicated fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's reappearance, the central mystery of how he and the others come back persists. Perhaps they exist as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a previous plot device. Alternatively, perhaps they are in some way all alive in a bizarre communal scenario. The possibility of a meta-horror story, inspired by earlier horror movies, also exists.
Moviegoers will discover the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
