The Manager Enzo Maresca Describes Pre-Match Period as The 'Most Difficult 48 Hours' with the Blues
Chelsea tactician Enzo Maresca remarked that the run-up to Saturday's win against Everton was "the most challenging 48 hours" since his arrival at Stamford Bridge.
The Italian delivered a puzzling comment in his after-game media briefing despite securing a 2-0 win at home thanks to finishes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those crucial points sent Chelsea back into the English top flight's top four, perhaps lightening the mood after a loss to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the team's drought without a win to consecutive fixtures.
But, when asked about the full-back's assist and general display, Maresca surprisingly divulged his annoyance over the previous 48-hour period within the club.
"How the players want to improve has been fantastic and this is the explanation why I praise them - because with numerous issues, they are excelling after a complicated week," he commented.
"Since I joined the club, the last 48 hours have been the most difficult because many people withheld support from us."
Pressed on his meaning, the former Leicester City boss added: "Most difficult 48 hours since I came to the club because people didn't support me and the team."
When asked if he was referring to people within at Chelsea, he responded: "Broadly speaking. In general," before specifying when asked if it was aimed at supporters or the media: "I love the fans and we are extremely pleased with the fans."
Injury and Disciplinary Crisis
Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's persistent fitness and disciplinary problems, remarking they had been without key forward Cole Palmer for a large portion of the campaign, in addition to being deprived of key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-game ban and striker Liam Delap to a couple of significant injuries.
"I really applaud the players and the squad because we played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them minus Moises Caicedo, eleven of them without Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them minus Liam Delap," he explained.
"And this squad, regardless of who is playing, they are doing brilliantly. Today was 5 games in 12 days so for sure when you see Cole Palmer available, we said many times that he's our finest player but we play almost all season minus our best player.
"We play five games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so happy for the players and it's something that I would like people outside to recognize because the effort from the players is remarkable."
Chelsea's triumph over Everton strengthened their standing in 4th place in the Premier League standings, with a Carabao Cup last-eight clash at Cardiff and a league trip to Newcastle scheduled in the coming days.
Speculation Over Maresca's Comments
It was ambiguous who or what caused Maresca to label the past 48 hours as the most difficult of his tenure as Chelsea head coach.
In that timeframe, the coach had traveled back with his backroom team and players from his native Italy, conducted a training session at Cobham, attended a pre-match news conference where he appeared relaxed, and secured a victory over an in-form Everton side.
It was hard to discern whether any particular press stories had unsettled him, if online comments were a factor, or if it was something more significant from inside the club at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca only sought to deny that it was an issue related to the club's supporters, some of whom have not yet fully embrace him since his appointment from Leicester in July 2024.
