The network's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Major Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the network launched a fresh animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often marked by bleakness, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and championed its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about observing this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially catalyze that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
