The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Total Faith' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch

When an 18-year-old makes club a historic moment in a crucial Champions League tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 round of 16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English champions in Tuesday's return to secure a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating star Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica

The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.

He joined Real from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.

He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.

Reports would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and determination he added to the team.

'His Best Attribute Is His Character'

In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the first team and awarded him minutes in the warm-up matches.

However, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that set up the clash with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing the game, every day you head to training and each day you have a game," stated the player after his debut.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."

Given a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.

Pitarch has seized it with performances that have defied his age and experience.

"He is a very quick footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," said Arbeloa. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.

"His standout trait is his personality," continued he. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I understand fans might be astonished to see him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to do what he usually does.

"He will keep receiving chances with the first team. It is delightful to have a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before entering the club's famous youth academy.

He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the option to play for both nations at the highest level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a competitive full international.

Pitarch has played for Spain at youth level, representing both the U19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are monitoring his progress with interest.

Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision in the near future."

His situation mirrors that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While teenage Lamine opted for La Roja, Diaz opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one win at the Etihad, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.

He was replaced by another academy player in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the team chase future success.

After his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the same. We handle it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I have to earn my playing time on the field," he said following the success at Manchester.
