What We Know About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 were hurt when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were transported to medical facilities.

The deceased have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She told the events leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain under care, with a number in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
